“Coo?” Fourteen year old Cooper Anderson glanced up from the book he was reading. Currently he was sitting up in bed, back against the headboard, reading Macbeth for his English class. It was late, 11 pm, and the little brother at his door should have been asleep hours ago.

“B? What are you doing up?”

The door creaked open more, and the curly haired four year old stepped half into the room. “I-I had a bad dweam.” Little Blaine said, shuffling from foot to foot. “Can…can I…?”

“C’mere, buddy.” Cooper said, smiling warmly. Without a word, Blaine was across the room in a flash, Buzz Lightyear footy pajamas making him slip a little as he dove into Cooper’s bed. Blaine quickly situated himself so he was curved around Cooper’s hip, head resting against his stomach. “Comfy?” Cooper laughed as Blaine finally stopped exaggeratedly adjusting himself. Blaine nodded, not getting the joke. Cooper ran a hand over his little brother’s mass of curls before turning back to his book.

They sat in silence for a moment, Cooper had actually thought Blaine had fallen asleep when suddenly the little boy spoke. “Coo?” The older brother glanced down as Blaine spoke around his thumb.

“Yeah, bud?”

“Does mommy still love us?”

Cooper froze, he had not been expecting that. “Wha—what made you ask that, B?”

Blaine didn’t answer for a minute, just sucked extra hard on his thumb before speaking around it again a minute later, “She w’s in my dweam.” Cooper chewed hard on his lower lip. A dream about their mother constituted as a bad dream. He shouldn’t be hearing this from the four year old, he didn’t want to be. “She w’s mad at me.”

The older brother shook back the dread, the regret, and the anger towards his mother. “That was just a dream buddy, it’s not real life.”

“But…but then why isn’t mommy here?” Cooper didn’t have an answer to that. How did he explain to a four year old that their mother had left them? That she’d all but had a break down and moved across the country to ‘find herself.’ Blaine had only been two, he barely even remembered her.

Cooper put down his book. Rubbing his brother’s back lightly he said, “Mommy had some things she needed to figure out about herself.”

“Like…like her favorite color? Why can’t she do that at home?”

Cooper closed his eyes, swallowing the lump in his throat. “It’s more than just her favorite color, bud. She needed to figure out what she wanted.”

“She didn’t want me?” Cooper internally cursed, he was so bad at this. He was just making Blaine feel worse.

“She loves you buddy, you just need to remember she loves you.”

Blaine said nothing for a moment, just snuggled closer to Cooper’s hip. “I don’t know.” He finally said. But then he said nothing more. Cooper wondered what was going on in his little mind, what he was thinking, what he was feeling.

Cooper tightened his hold on Blaine, pulling his young brother close. “I love you buddy.” Blaine nodded, as if this were obvious information. Cooper smiled softly, petting Blaine’s curls. “Sleep, little buddy.”

“M’kay.” Blaine said, voice already fading with sleep. “Nighty night, Coo.”

“Night, buddy.” The older brother said quietly. He knew now that Blaine was here with him the little boy would probably sleep easier…but Cooper was gonna have one hell of a time falling asleep now.
